AI SEO tools split into three jobs: writing, optimizing, and tracking AI visibility. Here are six worth trialling, sorted by which job you need first.

Type "ai seo tools" into Google and you'll get long roundups covering a dozen-plus tools each, sorted like software catalogs by feature count and price tier. None of them tell you which one to open first if you run a single site by yourself and have never hired anyone for SEO. That's the actual decision most people typing that phrase need help with, and it's what this list is built around.

AI SEO tools split into three jobs: drafting content, optimizing a draft so it ranks and gets cited, and tracking whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI answers mention you at all. A founder running one site rarely needs all three. Pick one tracking tool and one writing or optimizing tool before you add anything else.

Before you trial anything that writes for you, know where Google stands on it. Google's guidance on AI-generated content says ranking systems reward original, high-quality content that shows E-E-A-T "however it is produced," and that using automation mainly to manipulate rankings breaks its spam policies. The same guidance is blunt about the ceiling: AI content gets "any special gains" from being AI-written, meaning none at all. It ranks on the same terms as anything else, or it doesn't.

The best AI SEO tools at a glance

Six tools cover those three jobs well enough to trial today. The prices below are what each company lists now, not introductory deals.

Job 1: tools that write the content

These tools draft pages end to end. The honest ones also say, somewhere in the fine print, that you still have to edit before anything ships.

Frase

Frase runs the whole research-to-publish loop. It audits your existing pages, studies competitors and the questions your own visitors ask, drafts in a voice it learns from your content or one you set in its Brand Hub, and publishes straight into WordPress, Webflow, Sanity, or Wix, or its own FraseCMS. A feature called Content Guard checks your rankings and your AI mentions across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, and Google AI every day, and drafts a fix the moment a page starts losing ground; you approve each change unless you opt into letting low-risk fixes ship automatically. Basic plans open at $39 a month on yearly billing, or $49 month to month, for one site and one person. Professional runs $103 a month yearly, or $129 monthly, and adds seats and extra sites. It suits a founder who wants writing and rough AI-visibility monitoring under one login, without hiring anyone to run it.

SEO.AI

SEO.AI markets itself as an AI SEO agent: point it at your site, and it researches keywords, drafts pages, and publishes them to your CMS on its own schedule, in more than 50 languages. It also runs what it calls an automatic link exchange, where sites in its network trade backlinks with each other without either side reviewing the other's page first. That's a reciprocal link arrangement, not an earned one, and it's worth judging separately from whether SEO.AI's writing is any good. The homepage doesn't list plan pricing; the only call to action is "start for free." If you use it, turn the writing on and leave the backlink exchange off until you understand exactly what it's trading.

Job 2: tools that optimize what's already written

These don't draft from nothing. They take a page you already wrote and mark what's missing before you hit publish.

Ahrefs AI Content Helper

Ahrefs AI Content Helper grades a draft against the pages already ranking for your target query and flags the topics they cover that yours doesn't. It color-codes sentences by subtopic so you can see AI-visibility coverage at a glance, suggests titles and descriptions, and works in more than 173 languages. A free plan covers one document a month; the AI Content Helper plan is $99 a month for 50 documents; Content Kit is $299 a month for 250 documents plus an AI Content Grader. It fits a team that already pays for Ahrefs and wants optimization without opening a second tool.

Clearscope

Clearscope tracks where a brand gets mentioned across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude through a feature called Prompt Tracking, and its Query Discovery tool surfaces the questions driving traffic and AI mentions for any topic or URL you enter. Term suggestions guide edits to an existing draft, and a built-in AI assistant helps when you're stuck. Graphite's CEO Ethan Smith calls answer engine optimization, or AEO, "the new SEO," and says Clearscope connects topic research, prompt tracking, and AI content generation into one process that drives both. whatagraph lists Clearscope's starting price at $189 a month. It suits a content team that already has an editorial process and wants one place to check ranking signals and AI-mention signals before publishing.

Job 3: tools that track whether AI answers mention you

These don't write or optimize anything. They tell you whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google's AI answers already know your product exists, and for which questions.

RabbitSEO

RabbitSEO bundles an AI Visibility Checker, tracking mentions across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity, with an Automatic SEO Fixer that rewrites meta titles, schema, and alt text and holds every change for your approval before it goes live. Rank tracking covers Google positions by country and device, and a competitor research tool surfaces keyword and content gaps. According to onelittleweb's testing, RabbitSEO has more than 2,000 reviews in the Wix App Market as of July 2026, and the tool doesn't promise AI placement, which onelittleweb calls honest positioning given how early AI-visibility measurement still is industry-wide. A free plan covers one site and five keywords; Pro is $18 a month; Business is $120 a month; Enterprise is $350 a month. It's built for a Wix or Shopify owner who wants an answer to "am I showing up in AI answers" without hiring anyone to interpret a dashboard.

Peec AI

Peec AI tracks three numbers for a brand across AI models: Visibility, the share of chats that mention you; Position, where you land relative to competitors; and Sentiment, how favorably AI describes you. Its MCP server is now live, so that data can flow directly into Claude, Cursor, n8n, or any other tool that speaks MCP or the API, instead of staying locked in a dashboard. Peec AI says more than 3,000 brands and agencies use it, and Glide's CEO credits it with getting the company's blog posts ranking for targeted ChatGPT and Perplexity prompts within 24 hours of acting on its citation data. Pricing isn't listed on the site. It suits an agency or a team tracking more than one brand that wants the numbers available in tools it already uses, not just a login it has to check.

How to choose the right AI SEO tools for your stage

Buy for the job you have zero coverage on, not the platform with the most tabs.

  • If nobody at your company has ever checked whether ChatGPT or Perplexity mention your product, start there. RabbitSEO is the cheaper way in at $18 a month if you're on Wix or Shopify; Peec AI fits better once you're tracking more than one brand and want the data piped into other tools through MCP.
  • If content already gets written but nobody checks it against what's currently ranking, start with an optimizer. Ahrefs AI Content Helper makes sense if you already pay for Ahrefs; Clearscope makes sense if you don't and want Prompt Tracking bundled in.
  • If nobody is writing at all, start with Frase, and reread the Google guidance above before you turn on SEO.AI's autopilot mode. Judge the writing on its own merits, and judge the backlink exchange as what it is: a reciprocal link arrangement, not an earned one.

Once you outgrow single-purpose tools, the bigger suites bundle all three jobs. Semrush One's AI Visibility Toolkit tracks over 100 million prompts across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Perplexity, and AI Overviews in six regions (the US, UK, Canada, Australia, India, and Spain), on top of its existing keyword and audit tools, starting at $165.17 a month for its Starter plan, per onelittleweb's testing. Surfer SEO adds an AI Tracker for Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity on top of its Content Editor, priced at $99 a month for Standard, $182 for Pro, and from $299 for Peace of Mind, also per onelittleweb. Neither is where a one-person operation should start.

On backlinks specifically: if a tool's pitch is automatic backlinks, read what that actually means before switching it on. SEO.AI's own description is an automatic link exchange, sites trading links with each other inside a network. A link earned because someone reviewed your product and decided it belonged on their page holds up better than one traded automatically. Launch directories are one legitimate source of that kind of link: submit a product, someone reviews it, and it gets a permanent page with a link back. bunny.directory, the launch directory this post is published on, works that way. Free listings there keep their dofollow link for as long as the site displays bunny's badge; paid tiers keep the link without the badge.

One more technical box worth checking before you buy anything: onelittleweb's review of Semrush notes that its own site audit flagged a missing llms.txt file as an AI-search issue. If you haven't made one, bunny.directory's free llms.txt generator does the same job in a browser, no subscription required.

What's new (as of 5 September 2026)

  • Peec AI's MCP server went live, connecting its Visibility, Position, and Sentiment data to Claude, Cursor, n8n, and other MCP-compatible tools (read 5 September 2026).
  • SEO.AI's homepage now markets it plainly as an AI SEO agent that writes, publishes, and builds backlinks "on autopilot" (read 5 September 2026), which is the claim worth reading against the caution above.
  • Clearscope rebuilt its homepage around getting found on "Google, ChatGPT, and What's Next," with customer Graphite framing the shift as AEO plus SEO (read 5 September 2026).
  • Ahrefs' standalone AI Content Helper lists pricing at $99 a month and $299 a month on its own product page (read 5 September 2026).
  • Frase's Basic plan opens at $39 a month on yearly billing for one site and one person, with Professional at $103 a month yearly for teams (read 5 September 2026).

Key takeaways

  • AI SEO tools split into three separate jobs, writing, optimizing, and tracking AI-search visibility, and a one-site founder usually only needs one or two of them running at once.
  • Google's own guidance says AI-generated content gets no special ranking boost and still has to show original, people-first quality and E-E-A-T, the same bar as anything else.
  • RabbitSEO's AI-visibility checker starts at $18 a month on its Pro plan, while Peec AI, built for agencies, reports more than 3,000 brands and agencies using its tracking.
  • whatagraph cites Semrush research projecting that AI-search visitors could overtake traditional search visitors for digital-marketing topics by early 2028.
  • Some tools sold as "AI SEO" bundle an automatic backlink exchange into the pitch; that specific feature is a reciprocal link arrangement, not an earned link, whatever else the tool does well.

FAQ

Do AI SEO tools help pages rank higher on Google?

Not by themselves. Google's guidance on AI-generated content states that using AI doesn't give a page any special gains; it ranks or doesn't based on whether it's original, helpful, and shows E-E-A-T, the same standard applied to anything written by hand. A tool can speed up research, drafting, or optimization, but the page still has to clear that bar once it's published.

What's the difference between SEO and AEO?

SEO earns a position in Google's organic results; AEO, or answer engine optimization, earns a mention inside an AI-generated answer from ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, or Google's AI Overviews. Clearscope customer Graphite's CEO Ethan Smith calls AEO "the new SEO" and credits combining topic research, prompt tracking, and AI content generation for gains in both at once.

Possibly, for some topics, on Semrush's own projection as cited by whatagraph: AI-search visitors could surpass traditional-search visitors for digital-marketing topics specifically by early 2028. That's one category, not search overall, and it hasn't happened yet.

Can one tool track whether ChatGPT and Perplexity mention my brand?

Yes, that's the whole job of a dedicated AI-visibility tracker. Peec AI tracks Visibility, Position, and Sentiment and now pushes that data into Claude, Cursor, and n8n through a live MCP server. Frase checks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, and Google AI daily as part of its writing platform. RabbitSEO checks ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity for a fraction of the price, aimed at small sites rather than agencies.
